Residence Moving Away From Cape Elizabeth

Cape Elizabeth's population on April 1, 2010 was 9,015. This compares to 9,068 on April 1, 2000.

The Census Bureau released Maine 2010 results on March 24, 2011. Town Manager Michael McGovern said the population total for Cape Elizabeth is higher than anticipated, but that the difference would not impact how the Town delivers services.

The Maine State Planning Office estimate of population for Cape Elizabeth was 8,805 on July 1, 2009.

The Town's population has impacts on local government ranging from fees for services at the Animal Refuge League in Westbrook, to the number of representatives in the State House.

"We have been fortunate to have one representative solely for Cape Elizabeth," McGovern said. Dist. 121 Rep. Cynthia Dill represents most of Cape Elizabeth, while Jane Eberle, Dist. 123, represents northern Cape and parts of South Portland. The new data could further divide Cape Elizabeth's representation in Augusta. "We will have to watch the reapportionment in the House," McGovern said.

Data on age distributions, however, can be more useful than numbers when it comes to delivering local services. That information was not part of the 2010 redistricting report published by the Census Bureau March 24, but will be available in coming months, said Derick Moore of the bureau's public information office.
