Search on for man swept into ocean at Peggy's Cove

By Rebecca Lindell, Postmedia News November 8, 2010

Rescuers are searching for a young man who was swept into the Atlantic Ocean while visiting Peggy's Cove, N.S.

Police said that a bystander heard a man yelling for help in the waters near the iconic lighthouse just before 6:30 p.m. on Saturday amid rain and winds.

Two RCMPofficers responded to the call, but the man, who police believe is in his 20s, had disappeared.

The officers made a harrowing attempt to find the young man, falling into the ocean themselves.

"Fortunately for them, both officers managed to get back to shore. Both had to be transported to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries," said Halifax RCMP Cpl. Scott MacRae.

The Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre picked up the search and had rescuers scouring the water and the shorelines for the man on Sunday.
